SOLEDAD, Monterey County — October 26, 2026. Soledad Unified School District is preparing to unveil a distinctive response to the Salinas Valley’s housing challenges: a 20-unit apartment community intended for teachers and other school employees. The district has invited the public to a ribbon-cutting for Santa Lucia Apartments on Tuesday, October 27, at 4 p.m., at 183 Soledad Street in downtown Soledad.

What is being opened?

According to the school district, Santa Lucia Apartments is a two-story project of approximately 23,000 square feet on a 0.69-acre site at Monterey and Soledad streets. It contains 12 one-bedroom units of about 650 square feet and eight two-bedroom units of about 1,000 square feet. Two units on the ground floor were designed with full mobility features.

Plans also include a residents’ lounge, a conference and library room, bicycle storage, a courtyard, balconies, secured access and parking beneath a solar carport. The apartments are intended for district staff rather than general-market rental applicants. The district identifies teachers, classified employees and administrative or support personnel among the intended beneficiaries; eligibility and rental terms are governed by the relevant housing administration.

The funding history matters

The project is supported by Measure N, a general-obligation bond authorization voters approved in November 2020. The district says Measure N authorized up to $13.75 million for employee housing and student technology purposes. That authorization is not the same thing as a verified final construction cost for this one building, and readers should not mistake the two figures.

The Soledad City Council approved an affordable-housing agreement in October 2024. Building permits were approved in April 2025 and construction began in May of that year. The October 27 opening ceremony represents an important milestone, but an announced ribbon-cutting does not independently prove every apartment is occupied or that all final move-ins are complete.

Why this matters beyond Soledad

School districts across California compete for educators in places where nearby rental housing may be expensive or scarce. Employee-specific housing can potentially help a district recruit and retain workers, shorten long commutes and offer stability. Whether Soledad’s project achieves those results will require longer-term evidence about eligibility, occupancy, rental costs and staff retention, not ceremonial claims alone.

For residents: The district says the opening ceremony is public. Employees seeking housing eligibility details can contact Soledad USD Human Resources at 831-678-3950; the district’s official housing page is the best source for any future availability notices.
